Life expectancy at birth decreases in Turkey

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has published its 2020-2022 Life Tables.

According to TÜİK data, "life expectancy at birth," defined as the average number of years a newborn is expected to live if exposed to current mortality risks, was 77.7 years in Turkey between 2019-2021, but it decreased to 77.5 between 2020-2022. When looking back at the data, it can be seen that life expectancy at birth has consistently declined in the past years, and the latest data represents the lowest level in the last 10 years.

Women live 5.5 years longer

In Turkey, life expectancy at birth for men was 75 years between 2019-2021, which decreased to 74.8 years between 2020-2022, while for women, it was 80.5 years and decreased to 80.3 years. Women live longer than men, and the difference in life expectancy at birth between men and women was recorded as 5.5 years.

Life expectancy at age 15 is 63.5 years

The average remaining life expectancy for individuals at the beginning of the working age, 15 years old, was 63.5 years. For men, this period was 60.8 years, while for women, it was 66.2 years.

In the country, the remaining life expectancy for a person at the age of 30 was recorded as an average of 48.9 years. For men, this period was 46.3 years, while for women, it was 51.5 years. The difference in life expectancy at this age between men and women was observed as 5.2 years.

Life expectancy at age 50

In Turkey, the remaining life expectancy for a person at the age of 50 was an average of 29.8 years. For men, this period was 27.4 years, while for women, it was 32.2 years.

Life expectancy at birth was determined as 78 years in 2013, 78.3 years between 2016-2018, and it reached 78.6 years between 2017-2019, but it has been declining in subsequent years. (RT/PE)
