Investigation Against People ‘Sharing Unfounded Allegations About Earthquake’

The Governorship of İstanbul has announced that it has taken a legal action against the voice records making allegations about "when the earthquake will happen". The records in question were shared on social media after a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit İstanbul yesterday afternoon (September 26).

The Governorship has shared the following statement on its official Twitter account: "Esteemed İstanbulites, do not give credit to the unfounded information and voice records circulating on social media and especially on WhatsApp by any means. The necessary statements are made by official authorities. The necessary legal action has been taken against the ones sharing unfounded posts. Respectfully announced to the public".

Some voice records shared on social media and WhatsApp shortly after the earthquake made allegations about when the earthquake would happen.

In his statement about the İstanbul earthquake, President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) said,

"I have just seen on social media... A woman posted a tweet, saying 'Don't use the bridges, the cables of the bridge have broken off'. There are also some doing such tactless acts... Such a thing is out of the question". (AS/SD)
