Boğaziçi University protests in Ankara: 83 people released

A group of people gathered in Kızılay in Ankara yesterday (February 2) and protested both the appointment of Prof. Melih Bulu as a rector to Boğaziçi University and the arrest and detention of several students protesting his appointment. The protesters themselves were battered and detained.

The Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) Ankara Branch has announced that 83 people detained during the protests yesterday were released last night. In a previous statement, the ÇHD indicated that there were two lawyers and two law apprentices among the detained in the capital.

In its statement, the ÇHD has said, "All of the 83 students have been released from detention. But we will follow up the inflicted torture."

Students from different universities in Ankara wanted to gather in front of the Çankaya Municipality to express their support for the ongoing protests at Boğaziçi University. Trying to prevent students from gathering in the side streets of Kızılay, police officers closed the road to traffic.

In the social media messages shared about the police intervention, it was seen that the protests went on in the side streets. It was also seen that one of the protesters was battered by the police while being detained and had his teeth broken as a result of the attack.

On the other side, some people were seen to be denouncing the police intervention by sounding the horns of their vehicles and booing while the police were intervening into the protest of the students. (AÖ/SD)
