‘62 people subjected to torture in Turkey’s prisons in February’

Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul MP and Parliamentary Human Rights Investigation Commission Deputy Chair Sezgin Tanrıkulu has shared the findings of his Report on Violations of Rights in February 2021.

Referring to bianet male violence monitoring report as well, the main opposition MP has indicated that the right to life of 176 people was violated in Turkey in a month. 434 people were subjected to torture and ill treatment in February. Other findings from the report are as follows:

Violations of right to life

• Deaths in prison: 5
• Femincides: 33
• Occupational homicides: 138
• Total: 176

Incidents of torture

• Torture: 372
• Torture and ill treatment in prisons: 62
• Total: 434 

Violations of freedom of expression

• Number of convicted journalists, writers, publishers: 7
• Arrested journalists: 1
• Detained journalists: 9
• Investigated / prosecuted journalists: 12

(8 lawsuits, 4 investigations)

• Attacks on journalists: 2
• Orders of seizure, bans, access blocks: 196 

(192 Internet, 3 RTÜK fines, 1 book taken off shelves)

• Detained / arrested for expressing thoughts: 45

(42 detentions, 3 arrests)

• Convicted for expressing thoughts: 8

(5 on social media)

Freedom of association

• Arrested mayors, MPs and party executives: 12
• Convicted mayors, MPs and party executives: 41
• Municipalities / neighborhood-village heads replaced by trustees: 2 (dismissals)
