'3,000 children diagnosed with cancer in Turkey every year'

The Foundation for Children with Leukemia (LÖSEV) has released a statement marking International Childhood Cancer Day.

It said about 3,000 children in Turkey are diagnosed with cancer every year and noted that leukemia is the most common type of cancer as it makes up 30 percent of all cases of childhood cancer.

Childhood cancers are most common among children younger than five and treatment rates reach 80 percent with early diagnosis, it added.

"The rising awareness of parents has a life-saving role. Symptoms of cancer in children can be different from adults. In leukemia, fever, bone pain, fatigue, paleness, bruisings and enlarged lymph nodes are among the most common symptoms of leukemia," said the foundation.

It also noted that Covid concerns have been preventing an early diagnosis of cancer as people hesitate to go to the hospital. (AÖ/VK)
