Hüseyin Yalyalı from Northern Cyprus Union of Journalists (Basın-Sen) thinks that it’s only natural that an effort to settle the score in Turkey should reflect on Cyprus.

“Northern Cyprus is the lab of the Turkish deep state since 1958. Those fascist practices were first experienced in Cyprus by the Department of Special Warfare. They were then applied in Turkey.”

The PM in northern Cyprus, Ferdi Soyer has filed complaints against former PM and now the main opposition Dervish Eroğlu for attempting to influence elections through illegal means in the 1990s. Eroğlu is accused of having relations with several accused in the Ergenekon case in Turkey, who are on trial with conspiring against the government.

Yalyalı condemns that such issues are brought to public agenda just before the elections by a leftist party.

“Four years ago, people of northern Cyprus brought the Republican Turkish Party into power hoping for peace, solution and democracy. Sensing that this support is withdrawn, the CTP is trying to prevent downfall by subverting the agenda.”    

He explains the sentiments between the people as follows:

“Those tricks employed by the Justice and Development Party in Turkey are repeated by the CTP in Cyprus. Yet, without a sound legal base, these initiatives are doomed to fail. They just seem to be a calculated intervention to affect the results of the elections. Such initiatives are long overdue.”

“It would have been a murder if I rested silent against such allegations,” said Soyer, in a recent statement. His complaint involves a alleged document found on the computer of Ergenekon suspect and former worker unionist Mustafa Özbek.  

On the other hand, Eroğlu dismisses such claims as unfounded.(EZÖ/AGÜ)
