19 January: Gather for Hrant Dink and for Justice

A gathering to commemorate Hrant Dink on the second anniversary of his assassination will take place in front of the Agos newspaper on 19 January at 2:30pm. Other events are planned.

Friends of Hrant Dink, the murdered Armenian-Turkish journalist, will meet on the second anniversary of his death in front of the Agos newspaper which he was the editor of. The gathering will start at 2:30 pm.

Also gathering in Izmir

In Izmir, a gathering is planned at 5:30pm in Konak, in front of the former Sümerbank building. Trade unions, professional assocations, rights organisations and parties of the left are calling on people to bring carnations, candles and torches and come to the meeting.

Second Hrant Dink conference

On 16 January, Bosphorus University in Istanbul is hosting its second human rights and freedom of expression conference in memory of Hrant Dink. This year’s speaker is Sir Geoffrey Bindman, chair of the British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR). Bindman’s speech is entitled “Freedom of Expression: A Universal Right.”

Events in Tophane, Beyoğlu, Kadıköy, Izmir

On Saturday, 17 January, the Nor Zartonk organisation is organising a commemorative event at the Tobacco Depot in Tophane, Istanbul. The event will start with a documentary made by Nor Zartonk, entitled “My Name is…”, at 6 pm.

On 22 January, singer Şevval Sam will hold a peace concert in memory of Hrant Dink. The entrance fee will be donated to the Hrant Dink Foundation. The concert will be in Ghetto in Beyoğlu, starting at 10pm. Tickets are 25 Turkish Lira.

The Anatolian Culture and Research Association (AKA-DER) will commemorate Hrant Dink with the following events in Kadiköy, Osmanağa neighbourhood, Tellalzade Street:

Exhibition: “Hrant Dink and the Brotherhood of People”. Open until 6 February.

Film: “We drank from the same water”, Serge Avedikian. 17 January, 6pm.

Panel Discussion: “Hrant Dink and the Brotherhood of People”. 18 January, 2pm.

In Izmir, a commemorative event is planned fo 7pm on 19 January, to take place in the Tepekule Congress and Exhibition Centre. The following people will take part: Kayuş Çalıkman Gavrilof, Nilgün Toker Kılınç, Coşkun Üsterci, Grup Günberi, No Name, Kostas *Despina* Flippos.
