Police Claims Following Principle of Proportionality

Governorship of İstanbul made a written statement and accepted police attack during 13^th LGBTI Pride Parade in İstanbul as “a police intervention suited to principle of proportionality“.

Governorship of İstanbul made a statement in its website:

“According to the information obtained from social media and press organs, we received unconfirmed information that some group of people would gather, protest in Taksim Square and then march through İstiklal Avenue under the name of LGBTI Pride Parade on June 28, 2015 and some other groups would respond to it. That’s why, we took due precautions accordingly.

“Related to aforementioned parade; since they didn’t make any notification or application to Governorship and parade was provocative, paradegoers were warned but they kept protesting. In the end, security forces intervened in suited to principle of proportionality and the crowd broke up.

“After protesters were dispersed, life became normal again in Taksim Square, İstiklal Avenue and side streets. Any injury case has not been reported to our health institutions.” (EKN/BD)
