'Power plants near fault lines continue to operate at full capacity'

A lawyer yesterday (March 2) applied to the Governor's Office of Adana, southern Türkiye, demanding the operations of the power plants in the region be stopped.
İsmail Hakkı Atal, who has focused on environmental struggles in the region for over 15 years, noted in the application that the Emba-Hunutlu and Sugözü coal-fired power plants are located on fault lines.
Hydrogen tanks in the plants in the Yumurtalık district should be moved to a safe place, he argued.
In case of an explosion of the tanks, an area with a semi-diameter of 30 kilometers would face destruction and chemical pollution, he said, noting that the plants were operating at full capacity.
"After the February 6 Maraş earthquake, scientists identified a movement in the fault lines and stated that Hatay and Adana should be paid attention to," he said, noting that a magnitude 6.4 quake occurred in Hatay on February 20, two weeks after the Maraş quakes.
The earthquakesOn February 6, two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 struck the southern city of Maraş. The first quake in the Pazarcık district at 4.17 a.m. was followed by the second one in Elbistan about nine hours later. The quakes affected 11 cities in Türkiye's south and southeast, as well as Syria's northern parts, where over 5,000 people were killed. The official death toll from the quakes stands at over 45,000 and is expected to increase further, as over 160,000 buildings were destroyed or severely damaged, according to government figures. Nearly two million people have been displaced due to the earthquakes. |
