Ayhan Bilgen, who has been dismissed as the Mayor of Kars and remanded in custody for "terrorism" charges, has been acquitted in another trial.
In the trial of Özgür Gündem, a daily newspaper that was shut down by a statutory decree during the state of emergency after the 2016 coup attempt, Bilgen, a former advisory board member of the newspaper, was charged with "breaking the unity of the state and the integrity of the country," membership of an illegal organization," and "propagandizing for a terrorist organization."
Bilgen, who is currently at Ankara Sincan Prison, attended the hearing at the İstanbul 24th Heavy Penal Court via video conference.
Bilgen said at the hearing that he didn't have an "organic connection" with the newspaper and he didn't participate in the decision-making process of the newspaper because he resided in Ankara at the time. He was only making recommendations regarding human rights violations, he added.
Bilgen's attorney Özcan Kılıç requested his acquittal.
Repeating their opinion as to the accusations, the prosecutor requested Bilgen's acquittal of "breaking the unity of the state and the integrity of the country" and "terrorist propaganda."
The file of the charge of "membership of a terrorist organization" should be combined with the ongoing trial of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) at Diyarbakır 5th Heavy Penal Court.
The court acquitted Bilgen of the mentioned charges and separated the file of "membership of a terrorist organization."
