Protestors Attempt to March Towards Refugee Camp in Maraş

With the slogan “We don’t want people from Syria here!”, a crowded group launched a march towards a Syrian refugee camp in the southeastern province of Maraş yesterday. 

Police intervened the crowd after they caused property damage in Syrian-owned local businesses. 

According to Kahramanmaraş Haber 46, the crowd organized via social media and assembled in downtown. Saying that they din't want to Syrian refugees in Maraş, protestors chanted slogans to call Mayor Fatih Mehmet Erkoç and closed down the traffic.

After that, protestors started a march towards Governor's Office - an attempt clocked by the police officers. Police Commissioner Ümit Yaşar Adalar negotiated with the protestors and they came back city square.

Later on, the group assembled again outside Ulu Mosque and started a march towards the refugee camp. While demonstrators attacked the local businesses of Syrians on their way, tensions between protestors and police left one police officer injured in the head.   

While protestors dispersed on the street, tension still continues in the city. (ÇT/GOA/BM)
