Onur Kılıç Freed For Insulting the President
Freedom and Solidarity Party’s (ÖDP) Izmir Provincial board member and United June Movement Izmir coordination member Onur Kılıç has been released today for charges related to insulting the president upon a motion submitted by Progressive Lawyers Union (ÇHD) Izmir Branch.
While leaving Buca Prison, Kılıç said that he was behind his words and would continue the struggle from where he left.
Following the first rejection to a motion on Kılıç’s arrest, advocate applied to Constitutional Court. They also launched a campaign at Amnesty International.
What happened?
Onur Kılıç has been detained on February 12 after a anti-terror police raid in an apartment he was visiting.
The aforementioned charges were claimed to take place on January 11 where Kılıç attended a protest organized by United June Movement in Izmir on secular and scientific education. Kılıç is accused of calling the president “thief and killer”.
He is listed as one of the organizers of the movement.
After his detention, Kılıç wrote a tweet explaining the incident and added: “By the way, let me repeat: thief-killer Erdoğan!”
Kılıç’s first motion to his arrest was rejected by Izmir 5th Peace Court on February 18. Upon that, another motion was submitted to Izmir 6th Peace Court. A last motion had been submitted this morning. (AS/BM)
