No File, No Suspect Present in Hasan Ferit Case
Istanbul’s Anadolu 10th High Criminal Court continued the 4th hearing of Hasan Ferit Gedik case where 35 suspects are charged with “attempted murder of Hasan Ferit Gedik” as well as “founding a crime organization”, “property damage” during the riots in Gülsuyu neighborhood in 2013.
While police took notice, entries to the third floor of courthouse - the hearing was held there - were limited.
“We are at Hasan Ferit Gedik hearing. No suspect present, no judge present…No justice present!” Gedik family and their lawyers wrote on Twitter.
While no suspects have been brought to the courthouse, the transfer requests responses of the case have yet to to arrive to the court.
In today’s hearing, the court panel only rescheduled the hearing to January 6, 2015. No progress has been made.
It has been a year since Hasan Ferit Gedik’s death. However, the case hearings were canceled several times for reasons associated with “lack of security”, “lack of courtroom space” and “file transfer”.
What happened?
Hasan Ferit Gedik (21) died on 29 September 2013 after a shooting spree on anti-drug demonstrators in Istanbul’s predominantly Alevi populated Gülsuyu neighborhood.
Gedik’s funeral ceremony was suspended 3 days due to extreme police caution.
According to the autopsy report, Gedik was killed by 6 bullets. His clothes at the time of his death, a vital evidence, disappeared during the investigation.
The case indictment was completed in May 2014.
Drafted by prosecutor Nihat Demir, the case indictment charged 35 suspects (15 are jailed) with various acts including “premeditate murder”, “founding a crime organization”, “property damage” and “attempted murder”.
Suspects Mert Kazan, Ferhat Keleş, Adem Köşgen, Ümit Yeşilkaya, Doğukan Çep, Emrah Ok, Ekrem İnalkaç, Ercan Kütük, Mete Barış Durak, Murat Kesgin, Ercan Çiftçi, Hasan Taşhan, Şahin Eren, Yakup Dalkılıç, Zafer Turhan, Mesut Turhan and Tarkan İmeçtemur have been charged with “premeditated murder and attempted murder”. The case indictment also added that they have been one of those who used arms, concealed the arms and helped other suspects to run away.
The investigation concerning the riots in Gülsuyu neighborhood after Gedik’s death charged defendants for prison sentences from a range of 11 and 269 years with aggravated life sentence. (AS/BM)
