Media Ban on Consulate Raid, Hostages In Mosul
Ankara 9th High Criminal Court issued a media ban on all news coverage related to the 49 people including the consul general kidnapped by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) from the Consulate General of Turkey.
When Ankara 3rd Penal Court of Peace declined the ban ruling, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of Ankara Crimes against Constitutional Order Investigation Office objected to the decision. Thereon, the demand was sent to Ankara 9th High Criminal Court for reconsideration.
At 11:30 local time, Turkey’s Radio and Television High Council (RTÜK) released a statement on its official website, announcing the ruling issued yesterday.
According to the decision of Hasan Şatır, the adjudicator at Ankara 9th High Criminal Court, RTÜK announced the following: “With the aim of providing security for the 49 consulate workers working at the Consulate General of Turkey and kidnapped by the ISIL militants, the court decided every kind of written, visual media and internet news to be banned until the investigation comes to an end.”
Having raided the Consulate General of Turkey in Mosul on June 11, ISIL announced on its Twitter account that “they were taking the hostage Turks off to another place in Iraq.” (HA/AS/MEV/BM)
