Laid Off Workers to Return Posts

Applications are now open for those who were laid off from public sector posts on Turkey’s February 28 incident in 1997 - an era where Turkey’s first Islamist-led government has been forced to resignation. 

Reminding that previous compromises have forced women to remove their headscarves as a condition for returning, Capital City Women’s Platform Chairperson Nesrin Semiz said Turkey’s headscarf ban will completely be removed this time. 

Ministry calculating the toll

Semiz said at least 100 of their female members have been laid off from their posts during the February 28 era. 

“We still don’t know the exact number yet,” she added. 

“We made an official inquiry to Education Ministry on the exact number of women who were laid off. Because women were fired due to excuses like ‘unresting the public’. As you know, nobody was fired due to their headscarves. Family and Social Policies Ministry will launch a research to find out the exact toll after conducting one-on-one interviews with all those women.” 

How to apply?

Applications for those who want to return their teaching or worker position will be accepted between August 12 and 29. 

Some of the application requirements included meeting the working requirements, availability of applied positions, and application within 3 months, Education Ministry’s HR Department listed.  

Applicants have been told to apply to the HR department with a series documents including an official attestation, piece of identity, education credentials, working history log,  documents regarding the lay-off procedure (Ministry approval or higher disciplinary board decision or related documents).
