All Bars Closed in Southern Aksu District

All bars, men’s clubs, music halls, night clubs and other recreational spaces with alcohol service have been closed by the municipality in the southern district of Aksu, Antalya. 

According to Hürriyet newspaper’s website, Halil Şahin, the mayor who is affiliated with Justice and Development Party (AKP) said the aforementioned bars were a constant source of complaints. 

“They didn’t have licenses anyways. Therefore, whatever necessary was done,” he said. 

Responding to inquiries whether there are any licensed bars, Şahin said: “I am not keeping a count of bars.”

He also claimed that they have been hearing receiving complaints of gunsfire and fights around the bar area. 

“We have been letting these places for years but now we have done what our people are willing.” 

Where is Aksu? 

Aksu is situated at 36°57′N 30°51′E on the Turkish state highway D.400 which connects Antalya to Mersin. It is almost merged to Antalya, the province center and in fact it is included in Greater Antalya. 

The area around Aksu was a part of Pamphylia of the antiquity. Ancient city of Perga is within Aksu district. Later the area around Aksu became a part of Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Anatolian beyliks, and the Ottoman Empire.

Main economic activity of Aksu is intensive agriculture. Various vegetables and fruits are produced. The industry of Aksu is mostly based on agriculture. Tourism also plays a role in district economy. Perga and Kurşunlu Waterfall are important visitor attractions. (EKN/BM)
