Ahmet Kaya Posthumously Receives Presidency Prize

Ahmet Kaya, a protest singer who died in 2000, was posthumously selected to receive the 2013 Grand Presidency Prize in Culture and Arts. 

“This year, Ahmet Kaya was posthumously selected for the music award for his music, style and discourse that brought together a variety of different people,” declared the President Office’s website. 

While today marked his 57th birthday, Ahmet Kaya died on November 16, 2000. 

The award decision was made by President Abdullah Gül upon the recommendation of a committee including Prof. Dr. Mustafa İsen, Nadir Alpaslan, H.Ahmet Sever, Yusuf  S. Müftüoülu, Zeynep Damla Gürel, Prof. Dr.Tufan Gündüz and Prof. Dr. Osman Horata.

Other recipients of this year’s awards were as follows: Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin (Islamic science and technology), Prof. Dr. Daron Acemoğlu (social sciences), Prof. Dr. İskender Pala (literature), Prof. Dr. Bekir Karlıağa (documentary) and Tarihi Kentler Birliği (Culture and Art Institution).

The award ceremony, which will held in President’s Residence in Çankaya, Ankara. The award date is to be announced. (BK/BM)
