“122 People Disappeared Under Military Chief Güreş”
Doğan Güreş, Turkey’s 21st military chief between 6 December 1990 and 30 August 1994, died yesterday at a military hospital in Ankara. He was 88.
During his term, several cases of unclaimed killings, forces disappearances, village evictions and burnings happened.
According to Memory Center (Hafıza Merkezi), an NGO dedicated to uncover the truths concerning past violations of human rights in Turkey, there are at least 122 cases under the term of Güreş.
“Without accounting for his actions…”
Saturday Mothers/People of Turkey, a group whose sons were affected by forces disappearances during the 1990s, sent the following twitter messages:
“We know him as the responsible behind the disappearance of our sons, we know him a criminal against humanity, we knew him as the most important actor of the policies that condemned us in downtown Istanbul…Our curse will not leave him alone…
“The military chief of the era of Mass graves, unquestioned executions, disappearances under detention has died without accounting for his actions.”
