Özlem Arslan (18) was murdered two hours after she was divorced from her husband in Doğubeyazıt district of Ağrı province in the eastern Turkey. The reason for the divorce was her husband’s intention to have a second wife.

The young woman was killed by a close range gun shot.

Her father İbrahim Şahin, her brother Mustafa Şahin and her ex-husband Mehmet Arslan have been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Violence against women

Mukaddes Kubilay, mayor of Doğubeyazıt and president of the women’s branches of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), held a press release after she visited the family of the murdered woman.

Pointing out to the violence the women are subjected to by the male dominated mentality, Kubilay said they condemned the murder.

Arslan’s mother Fatma Şahin said her daughter was engaged in seventeen, married in eighteen and killed later.

She said her husband wanted to have another wife in addition to her and her daughter did not accept this. “She filed a divorce case and on Tuesday they were divorced officially. Her former was going to bring her to Doğubeyazıt, but her death body came instead.”

Arslan had filed a complaint

Ağrı Police Chief Sabri Durmuşlar said that Arslan had filed a complaint against her father, her brother and her husband on August 14, but had gone back to her house on the same day and denied the offer to stay in the shelter of the Police Department. (EÖ/EÜ/TB)
