Jailed Journalist Nominated for Freedom of Expression Award

UK's Index on Censorship Institution nominated jailed Evrensel newspaper journalist Sadiye Eser for its annual freedom of expression award.

Index on Censorship, a UK based institution that celebrated the freedom of expression with an annual award, nominated Sadiye Eser, Evrensel newspaper journalist jailed for terrorism charges, for its 2013 Freedom of Expression Award.

The award aimed to honor individuals or groups who struggled against censorship in the fields of journalism, publishing and fine arts in their home countries. Notable recipients of the award included Arat Dink, son of assassinated Armenian journalist Hrant Dink.  

The award nomination was based on application submitted to the institution's website. The award ceremony was scheduled in January 21 in London.

In December 10, Istanbul police raided several apartments detaining individuals suspected for "being a KCK terrorist organization member including Sadiye Eser, Evrensel newspaper journalist, and Zozan Eser, her sister and Özgür Gündem staff. In December 12, Sadiye Eser has been arrested and transferred to Bakirkoy Prison. (EA)
