Five Lieutenants And A Military Student In Custody For Ergenekon

The number of those taken into custody in the latest wave of operations for the Ergenekon investigation becomes seventeen. Among them are five lieutenants and one military student, too.

The General Staff announced today that five lieutenants and one military student were taken into custody in Ankara, Mersin, Hakkari and İzmir in connection with the Ergenekon investigation.

The explanation is as follows:

“Complying with the order of the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor issued on September 17, 2008, five lieutenants and one military student were taken into custody on September 18, 2008 by the military authorities. The abovementioned personnel have been transferred to the Istanbul Central Command.”

The number of those taken into custody in the operations launched by prosecutor Zekeriya Öz has become seventeen. Those taken into custody in Ankara and İzmir were brought to Istanbul after their medical examinations.

According to daily Radikal’s report, Mehmet Ali Çelebi, one of the lieutenants taken into custody, had graduated in fourth place in 2006-2007 and received his diploma from Yaşar Büüykanıt, Chief of Staff of the period.

Among those taken into custody were performer Nurseli İdiz, former head of Ülkü Ocakları (Hearths of the Ideal, an organization associated with the Gray Wolves) Levent Temiz  and Seyhan Soylu. (BÇ/TB)
