Gen. İlker Başbuğ, Commander of the Ground Forces, announced that the Prime Minister and he did not discuss the Ergenekon investigation during the meeting they had on June 24.

Stressing that the June 24 meeting he had with the Prime Minister was arranged upon Prime Minister’s request and General Staff’s permission, Başbuğ said that all those evaluations and interpretations towards uncovering a connection between this meeting and the latest Ergenekon detention are nothing other than conspiracy theories.

“Do not these conspiracy theories damage the unity and integrity of the Armed Forces?”

Right before his visit of the Commander of the Spanish Ground Forces Gen. Carlos Villar Turrau at his headquarters, Başbuğ said, “I do not want to think that those who produce these conspiracy theories are bad people, but I do ask the question if these conspiracy theories do not damage the unity and integrity of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK)?

Emphasizing that Turkey has been going through difficult times, the Commander of the Ground Forces said that everyone needed to be calm, careful, responsible and right-minded and he indicated that the media had an especially important role and responsibility in this. (NZ/EZÖ/TB)
