Four People Released in Diyarbakir Bomb Case

An explosion in the Yenisehir district of Diyarbakir on Thursday (3 January) killed five people and wounded dozens more.
 
Four of the people arrested in the aftermath have been released after no relation to the bombing was found. 

Tragic young deaths

Turkey still mourns the deaths, particularly of the four pupils killed in the bombing. Two schools in other cities have been named after Eren Sahin and Melek Ipek, both victims of the explosion.

Eren, whose parents had separated when he was three, was going to a science high school and studying at one of the cram schools for the university entrance exam. He was described as a “star student” by his advisor at the cram school. Eren was talking to his teacher, then said that he would go and buy some water. Ten minutes later, his teacher was faced with his body.

Melek, the fifth of eight siblings, left the cram school early in order to meet her sister, who was going to invite her for lunch. She too, was caught and killed by the bomb.
 
Ridvan Süer and Ferhat Mutlu were waiting for a friend when they, too, were killed in the blast.

The final victim was Cengiz Kaya, who had been in the area in order to pick up his daughter Merve. (NZ/TK/AG)
