As of tomorrow, Turks passing customs controls will be able to fill in their ballot paper in the referendum concerning a possible constitutional change.

Elsewhere 21 October

In other places in Turkey, the referendum will take place on 21 October, with voter registry starting on 14 September. A propaganda ban will be in place from 14 October.

Content of legal package

The legal package which will be voted on foresees that a president should be able to be elected into office twice for five years, rather than only once for seven years, that the president should be elected by the people rather than parliament, and that general elections should take place every four years.

In addition, the draft amendment says that for any parliamentary plenary to be valid, a third of the total number of MPs, that is 184, would be sufficient.

Tenth President Ahmet Necdet Sezer had vetoed this legal package on 15 June and decided to submit it to a referendum. (TK/AG)
