Police Officer Mustafa Atasoy’s trial for shooting and killing Cem İnci will start in Istanbul’s Bakırköy High Criminal Court.

According to the report by daily Sabah, the prosecutor is accusing Atasoy for voluntary manslaughter and asking for life sentence.

According to witness accounts, Police Officer Atasoy shot 22 year old İnci on August 6, after getting into an argument with him, thinking that İnci insulted him. However, the police officer prevented the medical attention İnci needed to reach him with his gun for an hour. İnci had eventually died from excessive loss of blood, when he finally could be taken to the hospital.

The Istanbul Police Department described the incident as “police officer’s weapon misfiring during a quarrel” and the support the police officer received from his fellow police officers as “an act of solidarity between friends.” After all, the Police Department announced, the police officer is a human being, too.
