Ironic Punishment for Conscientious Objector

Halil Savda, currently in military prison in Çorlu for his refusal to do military service, is punished with nine days solitary confinement for disobeying orders. Punishment coincides with the May 15, International Conscientious Objection Day.

In Çorlu Military Prison, conscientious objector Halil Savda, has been confined to his cell again on 15 May, the International Day of Conscientious Objectors. The Association against War (Savaş Karşıtları) has reported that Savda has received a punishment of nine days confinement for refusing to "wear the military prison uniform, attend muster, and have his hair and beard cut".

Demonstration in Taksim, Istanbul

Opponents of war and conscientious objectors are meeting on 20 May at 2 pm in Taksim, Istanbul, to celebrate the International Day. The Conscientious Objector Platform is planning to bring together old and new conscientious objectors. The main aim of this year's meeting is to demand freedom for Savda and the right to refuse military service. (TK/AG)
