At least five of the dead were reported to be children.
As the investigation continues, authorities said that the attack was probably carried out by a remote controlled device.
Baydemir condemned the attack
The blast in a park in the poor Baglar district, where the population is mostly Kurdish, came as the Democratic Society Party (DTP) called for a ceasefire on the pro-Kurdish militia group PKK and as a US envoy arrived in Turkey for talks on curbing a wave of bombs blamed on Kurdish militants.
Osman Baydemir, mayor of Diyarbakır commented that "the attack is a provocation to diminish efforts towards peace".
Executives of the Human Rights Association's (IHD) branch in Diyarbakır also condemned the attack saying ""causing social concern, fear and chaos was the main target of this vicious attack against civilian people".(EÜ)
