According to a three-monthly report by the Social Rights Association, there have been more violations of social rights. Trade union membership has led to dismissals.

04 June 2009, Thursday

The Social Rights Association (SHD) has announced its report of the first three months of 2009.

According to the report, the economic crisis has shown its effect on workers. There has been a rise in dismissals and wage cuts, for instance.

Compared to last year, there were fewer violations of trade union rights, but the report linked this to the fact that there have been fewer demands because of the crisis. On the other hand, around 1,200 workers were dismissed from 14 work places for being trade union members.

94 work-related accidents resulted in death

Tragically, the association reports that 94 workers died in work-related accidents in the first three months. Most of the deaths occured in the construction, mining and shipbuilding sectors.

The association also drew attention to the lack of work safety for people working in the public sector.

Referring to the right of living in healthy housing, the association reported that 71 people were poisoned by fumes from their coal stoves in the first three months. (EÜ/AG)
