Following the find of ammunition in Poyrazköy, Istanbul, Lieutenant Colonel Ecevit had been wanted by the police. He has now turned himself in.
An arrest warrant had been issued for Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Türkan Ecevit after a weapons cache had been found buried on land in Poyrazköy, Istanbul.
It has now emerged that Ecevit turned himself in at the army headquarters on Monday (25 May).
Last week, General Staff head of communications General Metin Gürak had told the press that Ecevit was on duty on a ship abroad, and that the necessary legal procedures would be carried out on his return.
According to the Ntvmsnbc.com news website, Ecevit is to appear in court on Wednesday, 27 May.
On 21 April, many weapons had been found on land belonging to the İSTEK educational foundation. The foundation stated that the land was part of a military area and that access was strictly controlled. One retired and three active army officers were arrested in connection with the find. (EÖ/AG)
