bianet is keeping a count of the stream of male violence that is reported in Turkey every day. Since 1 March, 12 women have been killed.
In Turkey, the “third page” is often dedicated to reporting acts of violence and accidents. Keeping a count of male violence against women, bianet has counted 12 deaths in 12 days, as well as other acts of violence.
12 March: (Rape) In Eskişehir, M.Ç. (28), married with two children, told her husband, a factory worker, that their neighbour Mehmet Turanlı (23) had entered their home by force and raped her. Her husband, Osman Ç., stabbed Mehmet Turanlı and killed him.
11 March: (Murder) Oya Ertaş, mother of two children, was killed in Bağcılar. Her throat had been cut. One person, H.B., was taken into custody. He told the police that he was having a relationship with Oya Ertaş, and that he killed her when she did not fulfill his wishes.He had also taken two bracelets and a ring from her finger.
10 March: (Murder) Transgender Ebru Dilan Pirinç (28), who had filed a complaint against a man harrassing her, was found dead in her home in Istanbul. She had been stabbed.
9 March: (Murder) When a canalisation worker in Adana opened the lid of a septic tank, he found a dead woman’s body and called the police. The woman’s hands had been tied behind her back, and she had been gagged. It is estimated that she was thrown into the five-metre deep tank around six months ago. The police believe she was thrown into the tank alive.
9 March: (Murder) When Fatma Kılıç in the Bafra district of Samsun returned home from work, her unemployed husband Mert Kılıç killed her. The couple had frequently argued, and ten days before her death, the woman had filed for a divorce.
9 March: (Sexual abuse of a child) 16-year-old ZP, already the mother of one child, was six months pregnant with another. When her mother-in-law heard this, she said, “How will you look after a second child?”. The young mother then shot herself in the belly, killing the baby. She has been released from hospital.
The Bursa prosecution investigating the case has filed a complaint against 22-year-old Cevahir Bican, the religious-law husband of Z.P. for sexual abuse of a child and depriving a person of her liberty. He faces up to 33 years imprisonment.
6 March: (Murder) The three bodies of Nuray Okkalı (38), her daughter Mukaddes Şeyma Okkalı (16), and her son Osman Yusf Okkalı (7) were found at the side of a road in Ankara with a bullet in each body. Another son, Abdullah Okkalı (18) had been stabbed to death. It is believed that the murders were committed because of debts.
4 March: (Murder) Hasan Dinç (47) killed his wife Zübeyde Dinç (45) by cutting her throat. He then took their four-year-old son to his sister-in-law. He was later caught. He said in his statement that he had killed his wife because she had taken a bath twice in one day. He claimed that she had said, “Yes, I am having an affair. I slept with someone else and came home, now I am doing my ritual ablutions. Is there anything you have to say to that?”
4 March: (Rape) H.Ö. (36) was taken into custody in a village in Isparta for raping a woman who was 8.5 months pregnant. The woman was in a state of shock and had to be treated to avoid a miscarriage.
3 March: (Murder) The body of 18-year-old highschool student Münevver Karabulut was found in a bin. Her head had been cut off and stuffed into a guitar bag, her body was found in a suitcase. Her boyfriend, Cem Garipoğlu is a suspect and has disappeared.
2 March: (Rape, Murder) Zeki Dağlı admitted to raping and then killing Bakiye Seyhan and her daughter Meryem Seyhan, as well as killing the father, Şükrü Aslan with a knife beforehand. The bodies were found on 2 March.
1 March: (Murder) In Denizli, N.T. (43) killed his wife P.T.. He said she had been chatting to others on the Internet, they had argued and he had killed her in a rage.
1 March: (Murder) In Gaziantep, 16-year-old Ö.F.K. stabbed his older sister to death. It is said that he went to his sister’s house, where they argued, and that he then stabbed her in 11 places.
1 March: (Rape, Murder) In the Keçiborlu district of Isparta, Ahmet İzci (42) raped and then killed 6-year-old E.Ç. (EZÖ/AG)
