The PKK attacked a gendarmerie station in Tunceli. One sergeant and three PKK members were killed.
The Uzuncayir Gendarmerie Station, connected to Tunceli central district, was attacked by PKK militants at around 9pm last night (6 November). In the ensuing battle, sergeant Bahtiyar Simsek and three PKK militants, one of them a woman, were killed.
According to the General Staff website, from 2 to 6 November three PKK militants were killed and eight were caught alive.
CNNTürk reported that the same station was attacked by the PKK in 1997, when three sergeants and two civilians were killed.
Milliyet newspaper cited a written statement by the Tunceli Governor’s Office, which said that during the security forces’ “activities providing public peace and security” a group of PKK militants was encountered on 6 November. Sergeant Simsek was killed when the PKK first opened fire, and then the three PKK members were killed in the ensuing exchange. Operations are continuing in the area. (TK/NZ/AG)
