Two French Journalists Detained at Border

Yesterday, two French journalists were arrested at a Turkish border gate with Northern Iraq after they refused to show their film material to officials.

Two journalists from the French Capa Agency, Estelle Vigoureux and Marc de Banville, were arrested at the Habur border gate in Silopi district, province of Sirnak yesterday (24 October). Habur borders on Northern Iraq.

The two journalists were passing through the border gate and refused to allow officials to watch the visual material they had filmed.

It has been announced that the two French journalists and a person with them are being investigated for possible connections with the PKK.

Consulate informed, investigation continuing 

Selman Saygidar, the Silopi Bar Association's duty lawyer for penal courts, in a statement for bianet said that duty prosecutor Osman Cakar was continuing the investigation and that the French Consulate had been informed.

Saygidar said that his legal support had not been requested yet, but that it would be when it came to questioning the journalists.

Journalist Vigoureux has filmed for the French Canal+ across the world.

Four Turkish journalists previously arrested 

Four Turkish journalists had been arrested in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari on 22 October. Ömer Oguz of the Yüksekova News, Nevzat Tas and Kerim Kantarcioglu from the Ihlas News Agency and Müslüm Bayburs of the Yeni Safak newspaper were arrested on Monday morning when taking photos of military convoys.

They were held at a gendarmerie station in Yüksekova district for around two hours and their ID cards were taken away. They were released after their IDs were checked online with the General Information Scan. (EÖ/AG)
