Anti-ISIS Students Attacked Again on Campus

An allegedly pro-ISIS group reportedly attacked with batons and machetes students against ISIS on Istanbul University campus this morning. Following the incident, police intervened the groups and detained around 25 students from both sides.  

Advocate Deniz Demirdöğen told bianet that among the detainees there was one minor who will be transferred to Juvenile Police. 

The remaining will first be sent to a hospital for routine check-up and then to Istanbul Police Headquarters for their statement. 

“They shouted Allah is the greatest”

Students from Istanbul University who did not disclose their names spoke up to bianet on how the incident took place, claiming that the “Muslim Youth” group orchestrated attacks on anti-ISIS students on campus. 

“They assaulted students after shouting ‘Allah is the greatest’ slogan. They have machetes and bats. Then there came the police violence. They entered campus buildings and detained 22 students. Some plain cloth police officers are still on campus. 

“Assiliants were the same people but they were more in number. They were around 20. 

“The total number of detainees is around 30. There is allegedly detainees from the other side as well.” 

All began with anti-ISIS posters 

This morning’s attacks marked the third incident on Istanbul University campus in the past 16 days. 

On September 26, a group of masked individuals attacked students who put up posters against the ISIS. They group’s entry on campus was blocked the next day. 

On October 9, a group attacked by another Islamist group was subjected to police violence and 27 students were detained. They claimed that they were tortured in Beyazıt Police Station. (BK/BM)
